Gripen or F-35? By 2022 Canada just will have new fighter jets to modernize the fleet of Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) despite a major dispute between Saab and Lockeed Martin, also initially including F/A-18E/F Super Hornet from Boeing, Eurofighter consortium with Typoon and Dassault Rafale. In the final stages of competition, Canada removed Boeing Super Hornet fighter from a very tight contract competition. Canada is closely evaluating the proposal, an economic impact assessment, as the final step of Future Hunting Capacity Project, but Canada still gets the final bid before the hammer is struck.

On the other hand, StandardAero as Engine MRO Sustainment Partner at Saab Gripen Aircraft has advanced in Canada's Future Fighter Capability Projects (FFCP) competition and Gripen complies with the requirements of RCAF. The joint team of Saab and General Electric (GE) Aviation selected StandardAero to be Gripen's sustainability partner as Canada's future fighter.

Nonetheless, RCAF has 85 F/A-18A/B Hornets in service and acquired 18 used Hornets from Australia, as it intends to keep these fighter jets operational until 2032. To the end, Canada signed a maintenance contract with Boeing and the acquisition of 7 Hornets that no longer fly will be cannibalized. Ottawa claims it will announce the decision by 2022, the first fighter jets to be delivered in 2025.
