Hyundai Staria 2.2D Bus comes in to replace the much-loved alternative Hyundai H1 Bus. The H1 has been favored by a lot of people in travel businesses, it has not touched into a lot of families as a "family" car as much as it did for premium travel. It has never really been seen to be a competitor to the famous Mercedes people carrier "V-class" due to material differences in what's on offer. Talking about technology, seating arrangements, and also the plans from Hyundai.

Internationally H1 has been offered with the nameplate  "Grand Starex" and had way more technology than all the variants we had. This shows that Hyundai has always been tapping into being a premium brand however in South Africa they came as a budget brand but slowly offered higher specced premium variants as the customer perception is also improving towards them.

The Staria is not only dancing on its own, especially in the Luxury variant, I have been assessing responses from those who are seeing the interior and all of them are starting to link it to the V-class, which means as much as Hyundai may have planned to play with other brands people do see a chance just by linking the two.
What I see though, from my side, is the Mercedes in its top-spec 300d (with options) is almost double the price of the top-spec Staria. The V-250d is also not cheap with almost an additional R400K-R500K.
So this tells me that the real contenders against this one are the VW Caravelle and the lesser-known Toyota Quantum VX Premium.

Caravelle is costing more than R100K more than the Staria and the Quantum is costing around R70K less. The nice part about Hyundai over the much favored Caravelle in this category is that specs offered are standard, things like adaptive cruise and leather seats are optional there by VW. We can't even compare the service plans and warranty on offer as Hyundai's 7-year service plan and warranty is hard to beat. VW is offering additional payments for the maintenance plan and to get to 7 years you need to pay an extra R30K. I am not saying much about Toyota but when it comes to looks, many would argue that Caravelle is an easy pick, Quantum is doubtful due to its "commercial" look and the Staria will forever be controversial.

At the end of it all, besides the looks, over the three, it will be difficult not to pick Hyundai in this case due to specs and beyond-product offer.
Currently comes in 3 variants, same engine and transmissions (Auto) across the variants:

Executive 9 Seater - R789 900
Executive 11 Seater - R799 900
Elite 9 Seater - R959 900
Luxury 9 Seater - R1099 900
