2022 kia carnival (overview)
The makeover of Kia's minivan is such a dramatic one that it even includes an all-new name: Carnival. The 2022 Kia Carnival replaces the aging Sedona in Kia's lineup and its boxy SUV-like styling is no accident, as the Korean automaker aims to capitalize on the success of its critically-acclaimed and hot-selling Telluride SUV. Large wheels, crossover-like proportions, and signature daytime running lights that flow into the grille give the van an upscale-SUV vibe that reminds us of a Range Rover. All Carnival models are powered by a 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. A host of driver-assistance features are offered as standard including automated emergency braking. Infotainment tech gets an upgrade as well with an optional dual-display setup with digital gauges and a navigation-equipped center touchscreen. Look for the Carnival on dealer lots in spring, 2021.
What's New for 2022?
The Carnival is all-new for 2022, with updated styling, features, and technology to help it better compete with the likes of the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, and newly redesigned Toyota Sienna minivans.
LX, $33,275.
EX, $38,775.
SX, $42,275.
SX-Prestige, $47,275.
The 2022 Carnival is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 churning out a healthy 290-hp; an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. All-wheel drive, unfortunately, is not on the menu, as the Carnival will be offered only as a front-wheel drive model. The Pacifica has an optional plug-in-hybrid powertrain and the new-for-2021 Sienna comes only as a hybrid, but we don't expect Kia to offer such a setup on the Carnival, at least not right away. Kia says the Carnival can tow up to 3500 pounds.

The Carnival's dashboard and front-seat area appears more modern and accommodating than the outgoing Sedona's. A large center console and an optional Mercedes-style dual-screen infotainment system with a digital gauge display are notable design changes. The photos provided are of an upscale SX-Prestige trim with leather upholstery; cloth seats are likely to be standard. Kia will offer a panoramic sunroof and lounge-like reclining second-row seats with pop-up footrests as options.
Interior technology and infotainment takes to take a big leap forward in the 2022 Carnival. While a single 8.0-inch infotainment screen is standard, dual 12.3-inch displays that stretch across two-thirds of van's dashboard are optional, with one serving as a digital gauge display and the other performing infotainment duties. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will both be standard features and we expect to see onboard Wi-Fi on that list as well. Kia boasts that there will be up to nine USB ports.
2021 Toyota Sienna (overview)
Toyota says goodbye to frumpy with the 2021 Sienna minivan's all-new styling, and an all-hybrid lineup makes it a particularly efficient option among its rivals. The new Sienna's more stylish body, wide-mouth grille, and squinty headlamps draw inspiration from the 2020 Highlander and give the van a more SUV-like look. Inside, the Sienna receives a similarly daring makeover, but still keeps a focus on practicality and family-friendliness. Gone is last year's V-6 engine. In its place is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder plus two electric motors that make up the van's standard hybrid powertrain; all-wheel drive is still an option, and Toyota is boasting best-in-class fuel economy.
LE, $35,635.
XLE, $40,925.
XSE, $43,175.
Limited, $47,875.
Platinum, $51,075.
Unlike previous versions of Toyota's family van, the 2021 Sienna is offered exclusively as a hybrid. The powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors that combine to make 243 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available and adds a third electric motor in back that drives the rear wheels. The Sienna's main rival—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid—is offered solely with front-wheel drive, but its V-6 engine and electric motors make 260 horsepower.

Complementing its daring exterior redesign, the Sienna gets a modernized and stylish interior for 2021. Rather than the open cockpit design of the current model, Toyota has created a tall center console that spans the distance from the dashboard to the center armrest, with a large storage cubby underneath. Upscale Limited and Platinum models have two-tone interior trim and dashboards covered in stitched leather-like material while the sporty XSE model gets black-and-white faux-leather seats with red contrast stitching.
