A Sunday afternoon in Aussie suburban Perth. Second week of July 2026.

Jennifer Watson — 42-year-old primary school teacher, mother of three — sits at her kitchen bench opening her mail. Between the electricity bill and a birthday card sits an official Kia Australia letter.

She opens it casually. Then her eyes narrow. Then she calls her husband Mark into the kitchen.

"Your Kia Carnival is subject to a safety recall due to a manufacturing defect that could result in fuel leak and, in the presence of an external ignition source, a VEHICLE FIRE."

The Watsons bought their Kia Carnival GT-Line V6 brand new in October 2022. School drop-offs at Perth Modern. Margaret River family caravan trips. Weekend beach visits to Cottesloe.

The same vehicle their three children pile into every school morning could be a FIRE RISK.

Kia Australia has issued formal recall REC-006644 covering close to 6,000 V6-powered Kia Carnivals in Aussie ownership. High-pressure fuel pipe nuts may be insufficiently torqued and could loosen over time, causing fuel leak that in the presence of any external ignition source could result in vehicle fire.

Kia Australia's exact words: fuel fire could cause INJURY OR DEATH to occupants, road users, bystanders.
