On the morning of 12 May 1797, the parliament of the oldest state in Europe gathered beneath its golden ceiling — short of its own quorum — heard gunfire outside, mistook its departing garrison's farewell salute for the enemy's first volley, and voted 512 to 20 to abolish eleven hundred years of statehood. The last doge handed his jeweled cap to a servant: "Take it — I shall not be needing it again." Across the entire fall of Venice, the Republic fired on the enemy exactly once.

This documentary tells the whole arc of history's longest-lived republic: the refugee city built on a drowned forest of timber piles; the theft of Saint Mark in a barrel of pork; the blind nonagenarian doge who redirected a crusade and took three-eighths of the Byzantine Empire; the Arsenal that could assemble a warship in a day; the ducat, the quarantine, the pocket book; and the constitution so coup-proof — ten alternating rounds of lottery and ballot to elect a doge — that Europe called it a political miracle.

Then the long gilded sunset: Constantinople falls, Bragadin is flayed at Famagusta, Lepanto is won and Cyprus lost anyway, da Gama routes the spice trade around the lagoon — and after 1718, eighty years of unarmed neutrality, Carnival masks, Casanova, and a Senate that concluded survival was not in the budget. When the twenty-seven-year-old Napoleon arrived promising to be "an Attila to the Venetian state," the machine built to prevent any bold decision performed exactly as designed. Five months later, at Campo Formio, he traded the thousand-year republic to Austria like a coin.
